Alex

Laying across the couch of my brother’s condo I couldn’t help but take notice of the riches that surround me. He sat next to me as he flipped through the channels of his large flat screen TV, with his jaw clinch tight. His crisp white business button up sleeves were rolled half way showing off the tattoos that covered both forearms matching his gold diamond faced Rolex watch. It was very clear he had a lot on his mind. He hasn’t said a word since he brought me here to his home and the only constant action he repeated was checking the screen of his phone for the incoming calls that weren’t coming through.

“She still hasn’t called you, huh?” I announced, breaking the ice.

“Who?” he responded in confusion.

“Jackson’s wife.”

“Her name is Maria.”

“Well I need to thank Maria; she saved my life.”

“Yeah,” replied bluntly as he arose from his seat. “You really should.”

He walked into the kitchen and returned holding two white envelopes. “Your flight to San Antonio leaves in an hour. I called a taxi to take you to the airport. You’ll be staying with a lady by the name of Leena. She will be awaiting you arrival. You will not run, you will go there and stay put until the birth of my niece or nephew.”

I silently opened the top envelope which displayed a one way American Airline plane ticket which left the Miami airport in exactly one hour addressed to Stacy Campbell. “Staying with who?” I asked with the sight of confusion upon my face. “Who is that? I don’t know these people.”

“No,” his eyes were burning red as I watched him fight back tears. “No you don’t know these people but they will take good care for you. Better care of you than I can right now.”

“Vince, I’m grown I can take care of myself. I don’t need a babysitter. I got myself in this shit I can get me and my child out of it.”

“If I allow you to stay here, Alex, you’ll be dead within the next twenty-four hours. Trouble follows you wherever you seem to be and I can’t have that type of drama around me right now. Trying to keep you protected from your past seems to be a full time job these past few days. Leena is an older lady with a kind heart. She works for me personally and has been working for Maria and her family for many years. I wouldn’t put you in hands I couldn’t trust. She will take care of you until I can figure out how to erase your past so that you can go back to living a somewhat normal life. Until then, you will live in Texas, you will work a normal job, and you will go back to school and get your degree. You will be a normal human being living a normal life. In that next envelope you will find your new driver’s license, your new employment start date, the key to the car you will us as transportation and two thousand dollars in cash.
